WHY CONSTRUCTION RECEIVABLES BECOME DIFFICULT

Complex Projects. Complicated Payments.

Construction receivables can involve multiple parties, changing scopes, retainage, disputed work, and project delays. These factors can make payment more difficult and require a more strategic, informed recovery approach.

Multiple
Payment Tiers
Owners, GCs, subcontractors, and suppliers may all be involved.
Retainage
Withheld payments and delayed final draws can extend aging.
Change Orders
Added work may be disputed, delayed, or not fully approved.
Project Delays
Scheduling, funding, and scope changes can delay payment.
Disputed Work
Punch lists, quality concerns, scope disputes, and contract disagreements.
Documentation
Missing approvals, contracts, tickets, or paperwork can complicate recovery.
Ownership / Financial Issues
Bankruptcy, business closure, reorganization, or asset transfers.
Understanding the circumstances helps shape the recovery strategy.
THE CONSTRUCTION PAYMENT CHAIN

Understanding Who Controls the Payment Matters.

Construction receivables can involve multiple businesses, contracts, and payment obligations. Understanding where payment originated, where it stopped, and which parties are involved can help shape a more informed recovery strategy.

Commercial project owner development
01
Project Owner
Funds the project, approves major expenditures, and may ultimately control the source of payment.
General contractor commercial construction project
02
General Contractor
Manages the overall project and coordinates payments to subcontractors, trades, and suppliers.
Subcontractor performing specialized construction work
03
Subcontractor
Performs specialized work under contract and may depend on upstream project payments to satisfy invoices.
Construction material supplier yard
04
Supplier
Provides materials, equipment, products, or related services that support the construction project.
When payment stops somewhere in the chain, understanding the parties involved can help identify the next move.

CONSTRUCTION COLLECTIONS — FAQ

Construction Collection FAQs

Practical answers for contractors, subcontractors, and suppliers with overdue commercial accounts.

What construction accounts can you help recover?
We review unpaid commercial balances for general contractors, subcontractors, specialty trades, material suppliers, and equipment providers. Accounts may involve progress payments, final invoices, approved change orders, or retainage that is due.
Can you help with unpaid retainage?
We review the contract, payment applications, completion records, and any outstanding closeout requirements to understand why retainage is being held. We distinguish amounts that are due from amounts awaiting a contractual release condition.
What if the general contractor says the owner has not paid?
We review the payment terms, project records, and the stated reason for the delay. Understanding the payment chain helps us reach appropriate decision-makers and clarify the obstacle. We do not assume that every upstream party is responsible for your invoice.
Can you pursue disputed change orders or punch-list deductions?
We compare the billed work with the original scope, change-order approvals, project communications, and completion records. We work to clarify disputed items and separate them from amounts the customer acknowledges.
What documents should we provide?
Start with invoices, an account statement, the signed contract or purchase order, and the customer’s legal business name. Include payment applications, change orders, delivery tickets, completion records, lien waivers, and payment correspondence where available.
When should we refer a construction account?
Consider a claim review when agreed payment terms have passed and routine follow-up produces repeated delays, broken promises, or no clear response. Share the project location, account age, and any known deadlines when you contact us.
Can you help preserve an ongoing business relationship?
Our approach uses professional communication grounded in the account records. Tell us about active projects, key contacts, and relationships you want to preserve so those factors can inform the recovery strategy.
What does construction collection cost?
Our commercial collection work is contingency based. We review the account and explain the proposed fee before placement. Any proposed legal action or third-party expense is discussed separately in advance.
What if a lien or bond claim may be involved?
Share any notices, bond information, waivers, and deadlines with your account documents. An attorney should evaluate legal rights and filing requirements. Placing an account for collection does not itself preserve a lien or bond claim.
How long does recovery take?
Timing depends on the documentation, disputed issues, customer response, and ability to pay. A claim review helps identify obstacles and the next steps; a payment date or recovery outcome cannot be guaranteed.
